Calligrammes

Do you know what a Calligramme is? I didn’t either until a few moments ago. I have a book called ‘Take Ten for Writers’ Β written by Bonnie Neubauer. The premise is that you use a writing exercise in the book and write for ten minutes. It’s a pretty cool book. The only thing I don’t like is that it claims to have 1,000 writing exercises, but there’s really only 100. Each exercise has ten ‘variations’. It’s the same prompt, but you pick a random number from 1 to 10 and then turn the page to find out what variation you will use in your writing. So there are 100 exercises with 10 variations each, so hence the 1,000 exercises. But 100 exercises is still a good number of exercises and so I’m happy with the book. But, I digress.

Exercise 10 in the book is all about Calligrammes. Calligrammes are pieces of writing that are in a shape that pertains to your topic. I have a 10 sided die and I roll it when doing the exercises to ensure my ‘variation’ number truly is random. So I rolled a number and my exercise was to write a stop sign shaped piece of writing that begins with ‘Stopping was . . .’. So I set my Write or Die Desktop edition for 10 minutes and began to write. Here’s a picture of my scribbling.

Then I went into Scrivener and attempted to type it into the desired shape. This was my result.

The typed version looks more like a vase than a stop sign, but you get the idea. πŸ™‚

Humid

Myra gasped for air, her long, lank hair sticking to her neck like straw colored plastic wrap to day old hot dogs. She swatted at flies buzzing around her head and tried to concentrate on her breathing. The air was thick and hung around the porch like mosquito netting. Myra took a deep breath in, fanning herself with her too-thin hand.

Glowing

Crouching near the base of the cement stairs, Magda could hear booted footsteps approaching. Shifting back into the shadows, the approaching torches were glowing, casting shadows of their bearer against the stone walls of the stairwell. She would know his profile anywhere. She unsheathed her dagger and held it firmly in her hand.

Defended

Defended

And in that moment, I realized I had defended him too much. I had come to his aid one too many times. I had trusted him way more than I should have.

The cold handcuffs clicked as they closed around my wrists and the office shoved me toward the waiting squad car. Putting his hand on my head, he put me in the car and shut the door. Tapping the hood of the car, he turned his back on me.

Future

Future

Sunlight beaming
Daytime gleaming
Never finding more
Blue skies showing
Your eyes knowing
Tell me what’s in store
Ever hoping
Never moping
It’s you who holds the key
Happy ever after
Full of joy and laughter
Darling, now I see.

Waiting for my sandwich
At the table by the window
Rain dribbles down the glass
Past my face
I feel very European
Sitting at a cafe
Waiting for something sweet

Resource Saturdays: NaNoWriMo

NaNoWriMo

November is National Novel Writing Month! I know when I first started getting back into writing, I didn’t know where to begin. I wanted writing prompts and advice, outlets and ideas and among my searches, I kept seeing people talk about ‘NaNoWriMo’ and I had no idea what it was! Through some additional research, I finally figured out what it was and how useful it can be in helping me complete a novel in just one month. Although today is day 2 of NaNoWriMo, I wanted to share it anyway in the hopes of helping someone get a burst of inspiration. You can join at any time, so don’t let anything stop you!NaNo Shield

What can NaNoWriMo do for me?

NaNoWriMo, or NaNo as most people refer to it, has many resources, boards, local groups and other resources to help you along your novel writing journey. Joining NaNo is free and allows you access to all of the NaNo tools and information.

During the month of November, there are daily posts with inspiration from other writers. Some of them are even famous writers. For example, the day 1 pep talk post was from James Patterson. Here’s a blurb to prove my point. This is not the whole Pep Talk post from Mr. Patterson, you’ll have to join NaNo to read the whole thing! πŸ™‚

Your Author Dashboard allows you to track your novel, post information about your book and yourself, track your word count, earn badges and other things that keep you motivated and involved in writing your novel. You can create groups where you post your work, get feedback, and encourage one another to KEEP WRITING!

Here’s my Dashboard:

NaNo Author Dashboard

You may notice there are several tabs across the top of my dashboard, Author Info (showing), My Novels, Writing Buddies, Buddy Of, and Stats. Each of these tabs is available for free to all members. You can add writing buddies so you can send messages to each other, offer encouragement, or complain, whatever you need to say!

If you want to add me as your NaNo writing buddy, just search for ‘eileenmaki’ and you can add me!

Across the top of the screen in the above shot (brown menu bar) you can access the NaNo store where you can purchase goods or make a donation to NaNo. You can also find local NaNo events and join others in your area for a ‘Write In’ event or get together.

So what are you waiting for? Head on over to NaNoWriMo.org and get started. Once you have an account, or if you already have one, add me as a Writing Buddy and let’s get those novels written!

Wordy Wednesdays: One Summer Night

The air was warm and I could feel beads of sweat forming on the divot of my lower back. I licked my lips nervously and tasted the tang of my fear. The sidewalk outside the restaurant was crowded and I patiently got in the line to await entrance. My wrap was hooked on my bent elbows, the ivory silk slinking over my arms. My midnight blue dress had spaghetti straps and no back. I felt sexy and elegant. My dark curls were piled on my head, allowing the sporadic breeze to kiss the curve of my neck.

Glancing at my watch, I could see that I was still early and getting closer to the door. A warm hand startled me, grasping my arm lightly and leading me away from the line. I looked up into his smiling eyes.

“You’re beautiful.” He said, grinning down at me. His dimples flashed.

How could I resist? I smiled in return and kept walking as he led me past the hostess podium and directly to a private table near the bank of windows. He held my chair and then handed my wrap to the hostess who stood silently nearby. His hand brushed my naked shoulders as he moved around my chair and despite the warmth of the evening, I shivered.

Resource Saturdays: Poets and Writers Classifieds

Hey There!

Are you guys all ready for Halloween? It seems like it sneaks up on me every year! On to the Resource! πŸ™‚

While looking for submission calls, I stumbled across an oldie but a goodie. The Classified ads on the Poets and Writers website. They have lots of open calls for various markets and listings for groups, etc. It’s a pretty good place to check out once in a while.

Poets and Writers Classifieds

The Classifies page has some different categories to choose from: Manuscript Calls, Conferences, Contests, Publication, Retreats, Residencies, Resources, Services, and Workshops.

PoetsAndWriters1

Once you make a selection, you can peruse the ads and choose options to pursue. The Contest section is my favorite. It’s got tons of resources to choose from. Check it out and let me know what you think.

The information is updated regularly, so I recommend you book mark it, or visit my Resources PageΒ for the link at any time!

Genetics

“What’s your field of study, Marty?”
“Bio-Genetics.”
“Bio-Genetics? Like cloning and stuff like that?” Sarah’s eyes were round with surprise. Who knew this jock-in-geek’s clothing was smart too?
Marty grinned, used to the surprised response he got when he told someone his major, “Yeah. Like cloning and stuff like that.”
