Today’s OneWord: Switching

Suddenly, the answer hit me like a frying pan in the face. They had been switching places! That’s why Laurie and Sam had both claimed they were at the cafe during the murder. They had switched shifts and not changed it on the shift schedule. So now the question was, who was telling the truth and who was the murderer?

Today’s OneWord: Nest

The nest was perched in the tree several feet above my head. I looked at the baby bird on the ground and thought how scared it must feel, how scary it must have been to fall all that way. It was so young, it’s eyes were not yet open. I imagined falling from the nest and hitting the ground, not even being able to see what was going on. I stared at the wobbling thing. It looked like an alien with it’s eyes bulging and not being able to see.

Today’s OneWord: Chat

Great, I thought. ‘A Chat.’ That did not bode well. Whenever Mike said, “Dan, Let’s chat.” it was never good news. It was never nice words for a job well done. It was always some managerial crap. It was always Mike trying to act like a manager when he was really just a ginormous tool.

I sighed and got up from my desk to follow him to his office.

Today’s OneWord: Grind

The daily grind. The old salt mines. Another day another dollar.

As I rode the subway to work, I tried to think of all the cliches that people use to describe going to work. My father’s favorite was that he was going to the salt mines. As a child, I never understood it. He was a contractor, what did that have to do with salt!

The subway approached my stop and I stood up to get off the train.

“Hey!” I heard behind me. “Hey, did you drop this?”

I turned to see who was speaking and see if I had dropped something.

Drive In Movies

Today’s Google Doodle got me thinking about drive in movies. Today is the 79th anniversary of the invention of the drive-in-movie theater. I found some interesting information about the smallest, largest, and most interesting drive-in-movie theaters on Inventors.com (Drive In Info). I have alwyas loved drive-in movies. When I was a kid, I can remember going to see Pet Cemetary with my family. My brothers and me were in the back seat with the speaker box attached to our window, huddled down behind the seat on the scary parts. We laughed and had great fun.

The drive-in theaters were always more affordable for us. We were a family of five and our local drive-in charged by the car, not the person, so we could all go to the movie for one price and sit in our own car, be comfortable and not have some weird0 sitting next to us (well, at least not a weirdo that we didn’t know that is.).

When I got older and became a parent myself, drive-ins were harder to find. However, when my boys were small, my husband and I lived in Corsicana, Texas, which had a drive-in theater just a few miles away. We took our kids there several times. There was often a kids movie first and then a movie for the older folks after. I guess the assumption was that by the time the adult movie (not THAT kind of adult movie – perverts) was on, the kids would be asleep. My oldest son is high-functioning autistic, so a regular movie theater is not possible for him. He needs to be comfortable, be able to get up if he needs to, turn the volume down if he needs to, etc. So for us, a drive-in was the perfect answer.

In my neck of the woods, there are two drive-ins. One is in Dallas, Oregon (Dallas Motor Vu) and the other is in Newberg, Oregon (99W Drive In). Both of these are a little drive for us, Dallas being closer. We haven’t been to either one yet, but plan to go as soon as they show kids movies. I wish there were move drive-in theaters in this area. They really are a great solution for families so other movie goers are not disturbed by babies, or kids with special needs can enjoy the movie experience too.

What’s your favorite drive-in memory?

Today’s OneWord: Jelly

It wasn’t something I needed, something I thought was cool or interesting. It was a necessity. I had to have it. It was like a compulsion. Yes, that was it. I was compelled to have it. The smooth green glass of the bowl looked creamy and welcoming. I had no idea what I would do with it, but I knew I had to have it.

Today’s OneWord: Treaty

***** Warning ***** Bad language in this one, Folks! *****

“A treaty?” I said, incredulous.

“Yeah, a treaty.”

He blinked at me like I was stupid. He was the one being stupid. A treaty? A fucking treaty? Was he serious with this? I just looked at him, at a loss for words.

“I’ll sign your TREATY with a shit pen and wipe my ass on the paper.”

Today’s OneWord: Emptying

As I was emptying the paper recycling barrel into the larger barrel, something shiny caught my eye. I stopped pouring the crumpled papers into the larger container and bent down to look a little closer. My hand stopped inches from the shiny object as a I realized what it was. A bullet casing. What the hell was a bullet casing doing in the lobby recycle bin?

Today’s OneWord: Hassle

I should have known it would be just a big hassle. It always was with Sara. She never did what we expected her to, what she should do. She was always drama.

I walked into the lobby of her apartment building and saw her standing by the elevators with her suitcase. Figures. She couldn’t even come outside like a normal person, had to be all dramatic, waiting in the lobby with her suitcase, crying.

I sighed and walked to help her with her suitcase.
