I had decided. This was it. I had to adopt a weird habit. I was too normal. Too plain. From my plain brown hair to my plain brown eyes. Plain Jane. That’s me. So, I decided to change something else. I’m going to take up a weird habit. Like collecting gerbil figurines or crocheting one sock that has no match.
Eileen Maki OneWord
Today’s OneWord: Butterfly
She was tired. Not just tired, exhausted. She was out of ideas, out of options, and out of wanna-give-a-shit. She sat by the window, the curtains open, sun streaming in her face. Outside, a butterfly bumped into the glass.
Today’s OneWord: Walls
Waking from a haze of darkness, Steven found himself in a walled room. There were no windows and he didn’t see a door, but the other side of the room lay in complete darkness. For all he knew, there could be someone else in the room with him and he would never know. He remained motionless for the first few moments, letting his eyes adjust to the gloom.
Today’s OneWord: Orbit
Orbiting my table, the waiter seemed to be lurking about, waiting for an opportunity to say or ask something. I sighed, knowing he would eventually ask it or I would ask him if there was something he needed. It happened all the time.
“Waiter.” I said, wanting to get it over with.
The young man smiled hugely and came to my side immediately.
“Yes, Ma’am. Can I get you anything, Ma’am?”
Today’s OneWord: Camera
“Camera’s don’t lie, Amelia!” He shouted in my face, flinging spittle on my lip and eyelid. He was furious, inches from my face as he raged on and on about the photo he flung around in the air like a butterfly on a string, fluttering about.
Today’s OneWord: Sacred
She rose, her dress trailing in the dirt behind her. Her hem was torn and wet. She resembled a bedraggled maiden who had been forced to work in the castle gardens. She ran. Holding the sacred locket in her clenched palm.
Today’s OneWord: Chief
Known simply as, “The Chief”, my grandfather had been the Fire Chief in Dunn County for more than twenty years. He had saved just as many lives as cats and was loved by all who knew him. He was a man who commanded attention and demanded affection. A hug from The Chief was like being enveloped in a big, furry, love rug.
Today’s OneWord: Epic
It was a failure of epic proportions. I didn’t know how I was ever going to tell her that I had failed. Failed. At the one thing she was so sure I could do. I couldn’t even do that. I couldn’t face her, couldn’t tell my sister that my marrow was not a match.
Today’s OneWord: Wagon
The station wagon trundled down the dirt road. Beige and rusty, it rumbled and made a racket as it bounced along the pitted road. My brother and I knocked against one another in the back seat like marbles in a bag, laughing as we hit one another again and again.
Today’s OneWord: Festival
I ran through the crowds, searching for him. He was here somewhere. I pushed people aside, yelling his name, frantically moving through the festival in search of his face. There he was. I stopped. Stood still. It’s better to know where your enemy is than to have him surprise you.
