Writer’s Digest: Your Story – Hair, Tangled, Fresh

Writer’s Digest has a contest every once in a while (I think it’s every other month). It’s called Your Story. They give you three words and you have to write one sentence that is 25 words or less using all three of the words.

The rules are as follows for the competition:

The rules:

  • Your sentence (just one, only one!) must be 25 words or fewer, no exceptions.
  • One entry per person, please.
  • How it all works: We’ll select the top 10 entries and post them on our forum. Readers will vote for their favorites to help rank the winners.
  • This is a free writing competition. The prize is publication in WD.
  • You can also submit your sentence an online form.
  • Finally, as we say about this contest in the magazine: “You can be funny, poignant, witty, etc. It is, after all, your story.”

The three words for the November/December competition were: hair, tangled, fresh

Even though the deadline has passed, I thought this a fun writing exercise, so I went ahead and tried my hand. Here’s what I came up with:

His hair was tangled and matted with fresh blood that upon closer inspection, was not his.

What do you think? Do you like it? Tell me in the comments below. Also, if you like, post your response to this one. I’d love to read your best efforts.

To get in on the fun, check out the Writer’s Digest website for the Your Story competition HERE.

Thanks for reading and Happy Writing! 🙂

Today’s OneWord: Hall

Sparkling sunshine could not compare to the brightness that filled my soul. I ran down the hall, a smile pulling my lips higher than they’d ever been. I threw my backpack by the stairs and ran to the back of the house, calling my Dad’s name.

“Dad?! DAD!!”

I slid to a stop in the kitchen where my Dad was making a sandwich on the island. I wiggled the paper in his face, my grin hurting my face.

“Dad! I’m in. I got in. I’m IN!”

Dad dropped the bread and ripped the paper from my hands. He quickly read the first few lines and then grabbed me in his arms.

“Congratulations, Baby Girl!” He hugged me and hugged me and we laughed. He put me at the end of his arms, his hands holding my shoulders.

“You did it, Honey. I’m so proud of you.” He smiled and my soul warmed. I was in.

Today’s OneWord: Teach

It was time to teach him a lesson. With his back to me as I entered the room, he hadn’t seen me yet. I stood still, looking around the room and finally saw my weapon. A hammer lay on the floor below the picture he had just hung. I bent and slowly grabbed it, keeping my eyes on the back of his head.

I crept quietly to the back of his chair. Raising the hammer in both hands, I paused briefly as a metallic scent hit my nostrils. I leaned forward slightly and saw coagulated blood on the side of his head. Damn it! Someone had beat me to it.

Today’s OneWord: Dominant

I had always been the dominant one in the relationship. She had always bowed to my will before. But now, she turned to me with fire in her eyes. Her jaw was clenched, her hands balled into fists and she grinned. My heart skipped a beat and I know my surprise was plain on my face. I watched as she drew her fist back and let it fly, hitting me squarely in the nose.

Today’s OneWord: Happy

For the first time in a long time, I was happy. I turned to hug my sister, a smile on my face and so much love in my eyes. Her face was full of pain. Confused for a moment, I looked down to see the sword protruding from her belly, her blood spilling from her body.

Today’s OneWord: Dehydrated

Marcy opened her eyes slowly. She felt weird, her body felt weird and she was in pain. Opening her eyes didn’t help the situation. She was upside down, still in her seat belt, but the car was upside down. The windshield was smashed in and there was glass all over the car. Marcy realized she had been in the car for quite a while and was probably dehydrated as well as suffering internal injuries.

Today’s OneWord: Porter

“You did what to the porter?!” Alex almost screamed the question at Marcy.
Marcy giggled and staggered a little.
“I pretended like I tripped and showed him my ass as I fell down.”
She laughed like it was the funniest thing ever.
Alex grabbed her arm and pulled her to him.
“Did you have panties on?” He growled into her face.
Marcy, realizing he was truly angry, shook her head slowly from side to side.

Today’s OneWord: Manners

Minding my manners, I carefully dabbed at the corners of my mouth with the fine linen napkin. My stomach was churning so fast, it was a miracle I could keep anything down. I glanced at Stephen. He smiled warmly at me. I felt encouraged so I looked down the table at his mother, the Matriarch of the family. She looked from Stephen to me and glowered. She mouthed the word “NO” at me and slightly shook her head as if to tell me Stephen would never be mine. The fight was on.
