Story Dice

Story Dice: Tree, Couple, Umbrella

I love finding new writing tools. I found an app on for my iPhone that is story dice. You’ve probably heard of Story Dice. They have pictures on them and you roll the dice and try to use the pictures in your story or other writing piece. Β The app I have been using is from Thinkamingo and it cost me $1.99 from the App Store. I like it because I can set the app to roll up to 10 dice if I want to.

I love the idea of story dice. You can use one picture in each paragraph, use it to think up a title, characteristics, almost anything. They are very versatile. So this week I rolled 3 dice and got a Tree, a Couple, and an Umbrella. So here’s what I wrote:

We were married beneath the reaching branches of a majestic oak tree but when you were buried I stood alone beneath an umbrella. I’m ashamed to admit that part of me was glad you were gone. Now I had no one to hold me back from my mission, no one to keep safe and no one to care if I was not.

I had loved in your life like I had loved no other and now in death your memory made me soft and so I cast it aside and said goodbye. I didn’t need you where I was going and I certainly didn’t want you there. I closed my umbrella and left it with you.

Walking to the waiting car the rain poured all around me, dropping to the already wet ground. My feet sloshed through the soggy grass, mud coming up and over the side of my loafers. Instead of overflowing, I took it in.

The car door opened as I approached and I bent to get in. In the dry interior I felt like a fish out of water. A handkerchief was handed to me and I took it in silence. I held it feeling the smooth material between my fingers.

Defined

DEFINED

“You cannot let yourself be defined by what others think of you, Camelia.”

Camelia’s shoes were worn through on the big toe of her left foot. She concentrated there instead of meeting the hurt in her father’s eyes.

“Camelia.” He said her name softly and she looked up. Tears welled in the older man’s eyes. “Please help me understand.”

“I can’t.” She breathed before her own tears overflowed.

Harm

HARM

“I meant no harm.”

He was silent and stared at me for a moment. He opened his mouth to speak and his lips twisted, a precursor to what I was about to hear.

He closed his mouth and shook his head.

“I can’t believe you don’t get it.” He said.

Selling

SELLING

“What? I’m not selling anything.” The young man looked perplexed, standing on the doorstep.

“I don’t want anything for free either.” I started to close the door.

“Wait! I’m your son!” He shouted, shoving his foot in the closing door.

I stopped. “That’s preposterous! I don’t have a son. I’ve never had any children.”

“It was while you were at White Hall.”

I stopped and opened the door with a shaking hand. No one had mentioned that place to me in over 20 years.

Defended

Defended

And in that moment, I realized I had defended him too much. I had come to his aid one too many times. I had trusted him way more than I should have.

The cold handcuffs clicked as they closed around my wrists and the office shoved me toward the waiting squad car. Putting his hand on my head, he put me in the car and shut the door. Tapping the hood of the car, he turned his back on me.

NaNoWriMo Progress: 21,600 Words!

Hey everyone!

In case you didn’t know, I’m participating in NaNoWriMo this year. This is day 7 and I just logged my updated word count at 21,600.

I am ahead of schedule and last weekend’s goal of 5,000 words each day kind of kicked my booty, so this weekend, I’m sticking to my 2,000 words per day goal. Check out my dashboard, yo!

DaySevenStats

I’ve finished my 2,000 words for today, finishing 2,147 as indicated on my dashboard. I also have a word goal that I set per chapter in my Scrivener application and when I reach it, the bar turns green, so I know I’ve hit my mark.

Here’s a shot of a snippet from the end of Chapter 10, heading into Part II of the novel where the meat happens. Underneath, you can see the chapter word count and on the bottom right, you can see my goal bar is green ’cause I’m a good girl and did all my words today. πŸ™‚

Are any of you participating in NaNo this year? How’s it going? If you need some inspiration, check out my Resources Page for writing prompts, ideas and other resources. I’m so proud of myself for sticking to my goals and meeting my daily goals every day so far. I won’t lie, it’s hard work and I’m tired. But it will be SO worth it once November is over and I have the completed first novel in my series (series? Yes, series!) of novels to come. And I’m so proud of YOU for participating and hanging in there. If you’ve fallen behind in your goals, it’s not too late to get caught up. Just dedicate some time to writing this weekend and you’ll be back in the game!

Wordy Wednesdays: European

European

Waiting for my sandwich
At the table by the window
Rain dribbles down the glass
Past my face
I feel very European
Sitting at a cafe
Waiting for something sweet
And coffee

Wordy Wednesdays: One Summer Night

The air was warm and I could feel beads of sweat forming on the divot of my lower back. I licked my lips nervously and tasted the tang of my fear. The sidewalk outside the restaurant was crowded and I patiently got in the line to await entrance. My wrap was hooked on my bent elbows, the ivory silk slinking over my arms. My midnight blue dress had spaghetti straps and no back. I felt sexy and elegant. My dark curls were piled on my head, allowing the sporadic breeze to kiss the curve of my neck.

Glancing at my watch, I could see that I was still early and getting closer to the door. A warm hand startled me, grasping my arm lightly and leading me away from the line. I looked up into his smiling eyes.

“You’re beautiful.” He said, grinning down at me. His dimples flashed.

How could I resist? I smiled in return and kept walking as he led me past the hostess podium and directly to a private table near the bank of windows. He held my chair and then handed my wrap to the hostess who stood silently nearby. His hand brushed my naked shoulders as he moved around my chair and despite the warmth of the evening, I shivered.

Genetics

“What’s your field of study, Marty?”
“Bio-Genetics.”
“Bio-Genetics? Like cloning and stuff like that?” Sarah’s eyes were round with surprise. Who knew this jock-in-geek’s clothing was smart too?
Marty grinned, used to the surprised response he got when he told someone his major, “Yeah. Like cloning and stuff like that.”
